Planning ahead is the key here; this can save you hours of stress in the long run. Once you know the completion date of the move, start planning! If you are planning to conduct the moving process alone, and that is brave, be sure to begin taking steps early in the game in order to ensure a successful relocation. If you are getting a professional removal service, here are some useful tips...
One Month To Go
- Contact Telephone Company to organize final billing of line.
- Inform Electrical companies that you will be moving and arrange to get meters read.
- Start collecting Packing Materials.
- Book time off work.
Two Weeks and Counting...
- Book Transport Company or van.
- Arrange insurances (if necessary) for the move.
- Inform appropriate people of your Change of Address.
- Tell Post Office to redirect mail on date of move.
- Organize for someone to look after any kids and pets.
- Make plan of new home and decide which rooms will be used for what (if appropriate).
- Start Packing (it's never too early).
One Week Left..
- Arrange for any final bills to be paid.
- Cancel any services, e.g. newspaper delivery.
- Confirm arrangements with utility companies.
- Arrange the exchange of keys. Collect yours as soon as possible.
- Find some old blankets to put down in new house to protect carpets.
- Start cleaning the house.
- The Day Before
- Label boxes and finalise packing.
- Pack a container for emergency supplies
- Defrost fridge/freezer.
- Finish cleaning the house.
The Day of the Move...
- Have meters read.
- Disconnect any remaining appliances.
- Have one last final check.
- Close and lock doors and windows.
The actual day of moving is probably going to be very busy and very long. To help make it go as smoothly as possible, try to pack one box with all you will need to make a cup of tea or coffee, including the kettle and some biscuits, cakes or even some sandwiches, who knows when you might get the chance eat next. If you have a thermos flask this it but be careful when transporting it. Try to take this box in the car rather than let the moving men take it.
