Having a garage sale prior to your move can help in two big ways: Depending on how well you fit the description of a pack rat, you could potentially earn a nice chunk of change. A methodical look at all of the things that you’ve collected over the years, followed by a big kiss goodbye to your favorite old T-shirts means fewer items to move.
Some additional tips...
Planning your Move
Planning ahead is the key here; this can save you hours of stress in the long run. Once you know the completion date of the move, start planning! If you are planning to conduct the moving process alone, and that is brave, be sure to begin taking steps early in the game in order to ensure a successful relocation. If you are getting a professional removal service, here are some useful tips...
Unpack With A Plan
You're finally there and your move is now two-thirds of the way done. The last part is unpacking and getting settled into your new home. This can be the phase that takes the longest, but can also be the most fun. Unpacking gives you a chance to get the house organized -- you know, the way you'd like to keep it all year, but it never works out that way. When you start wading through the sea of boxes, there should be a method to your madness.
Storing Your Possessions
Here's what to consider when you stash your stuff: Storage can be used for many different reasons. If you're trying to sell your home you may want to free closets and rooms of extra clutter so that the place shows better. Maybe you have too much furniture for your new home; the kids have moved out but you can't part with all their childhood memorabilia; you want to store items for different seasons; you have stacks of documents that you need to keep but don't want them to take up living space.
Pack Up Your Dining Room
The dining room will generally include your most fragile china and crystal ware. Each item should be carefully wrapped in paper and placed in dishpack cartons; paper dividers are recommended for stemware. China & Glassware: Wrap all pieces of china and glassware individually. Using several sheets of clean paper, start from the corner, wrapping diagonally and continuously tucking in overlapping edges. A generous amount of paper padding and cushioning is required for all china and glassware.
Packing & Moving Tips
Moving your home to the next street or across the country is a serious undertaking. Use the proper packing materials. It will payoff in the long run! Sturdy boxes, packing tape, and bubble wrap can all be purchased at nearby stationery shops or hardware stores. Boxes can be found there too. Sturdy boxes can also be retrieved from wholesale companies, at no charge, after a shipment. Other great types of reasonably priced padding for your boxes include wadded up newspaper, old pillows and blankets.
Make sure you have everything on in the materials list. Put all of the cleaning stuff into the boxes. Start in one room and don't leave until it's spotless. If you pick up bits and pieces all over the house, you won't feel like you've accomplished much. Don't clean the floors; toilets or bathroom sinks until right before you're leaving. If you do, you'll just have to do it all over again.
Cleaning Materials Checklist
Now that everything is boxed up and ready to go, you'll want to tackle those mystery stains in the hallway and dingy bathroom tiles. If you have enough people helping you move some can be cleaning while others help finish packing up. Just like packing, there's a method to cleaning up your old place... Some of the materials needed include: Paper towels galore and/or cleaning rags...
